Profile

Atsushi Masuda was born in Hyogo, Japan, and started playing koto since he was a child. He won the National Koto Contest for elementary and junior high school and passed NHK Traditional Japanese Music Auditon at the age of 20.

Masuda studied jazz theory under Keiichi Ishibashi, a worldwide bassist, and Japanese music in NHK Academy for Traditional Japanese Music. From those experiences, he has been playing his original musical pieces and jazz standards, using his original modern koto picks which he remade the traditional picks from Edo period.

Masuda performed in various countries such as Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Finland, Chinese and so on. While he is performing both in Japan and overseas, he is also working on teaching and spreading traditional instument, koto, by using his original short koto and music textbook.
